Sony is Japanese multinational conglomerate originally engaged in the manufacture of consumer electronics although it is now highly diversified and engaged in diverse operations including software, motion picture production (Sony pictures), music production (Sony music), as well as a multitude of other services including financial and medical (Sony.com). It was founded in 1946 after World War II by Masaru Ibuka with capital of less than 200,000 yen-slightly more than $1,500 today. In the mid 1950s, Sony ambitiously embarked on international expansion, officially changing its name from TTK to Sony Corp. Between the 1960s and 1980s, it started to expand its operations from the United States to Europe.
